House Democrats are demanding to hear from U.S. intelligence officials following allegations that Russia put bounties on American troops in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Robert Hendriks, of Locust Valley, was 25 years old when he and two other U.S. Marines were killed in a car bombing in Afghanistan in April 2019.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Now, the Associated Press reports that the U.S. intelligence community is investigating whether that attack is linked to allegations that Russia offered money to Taliban-linked militants who killed American troops in Afghanistan.
Hendriks' father told News 12 Tuesday, "I am just waiting to hear if there is any truth to this, since there is nothing factual at this point."
President Donald Trump tweeted that "intel" did not find this information on Russian bounties "credible" and "therefore did not report it to me".
Republican Rep. Peter King says Congress needs to hold hearings to get to the bottom of what happened.
"I was on the Intelligence Committee for a number of years, and often you would get allegations like this. Some turn out to be true, some didn't. The final word isn't in yet, but I would say even if it were not definite, you would still bring it to the president's attention. So I don't know why they didn't," said King.
Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer responded to Trump's tweet Tuesday saying, "Instead of dithering about what he knew and didn't know, he should have a plan. And above all, go after Putin. This president has been played like a fool by President Putin."
The Kremlin has denied the allegations that it offered bounties to militants to kill American troops.
