Communities across Long Island and the U.S. are seeing an explosion in the use of illegal fireworks.
Videos of fireworks have been flooding social media in recent days. Frank Messano, from Stewart Manor, says illegal fireworks are a nightly thing.
Viewers have reached out to News 12 over fireworks concerns across Nassau and Suffolk, including in Bethpage, Wantagh, Huntington, Lindenhurst, Seaford, Middle Island and South Setauket.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says she's seen an increase in the number of calls about fireworks, and announced she is launching a campaign to have a way to report fireworks to the Office of Consumer Affairs.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and officials say there are enforcement efforts and public service announcements regarding fireworks.
Suffolk police tell News 12 they've charged one person with unlawfully possessing fireworks and another person with unlawful sale of fireworks.
They say to call 1-800-220-TIPS to report anyone who is selling or storing illegal fireworks.
Nassau will have a Consumer Affairs email established by the end of the week for similar tips on larger suppliers of fireworks.
Nassau police told News 12 in a statement, "The Nassau Police Department has seen a significant increase in the number of firework calls. Police have been and will continue to respond to all 911 calls and take appropriate action. The public is reminded to not use fireworks, as they are illegal and potentially harmful."
