Assemblyman Mike LiPetri called on Gov. Cuomo Tuesday to end the economic shut down on Long Island. He says New York has flattened the curve and needs to open now.
Denise Tristano is ready to get back to work. Since March, her Massapequa Park salon has been closed, leaving all of her employees out of work. She says she understands how serious the pandemic is, but can't survive much longer.
"I'll do what I have to do to get back and be part of this economy," says Tristano.
Tristano says she's already two months behind on rent and is working with her landlord on payment options.
Health officials say they understand businesses are in a tough spot, but caution that reopening must be done carefully.
"Certainly the worst thing that could happen for business and all of us is if we have a huge increase of cases and we all end up right back at the beginning where we were eight weeks ago," says Nassau Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein.
Cuomo echoed that advice, saying the state will not be callous in its actions.
"Many of the other places rushed reopening and actually had to backtrack and close things again. That's the last thing we want to happen here," says Cuomo.
