Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone provided his Wednesday COVID-19 update, giving new countywide numbers and looking ahead to possible reopening plans.
NOTES:
- 34,079 total cases, increase of 661 in last 24 hours.
- Decrease by 34 in total hospitalizations -- 9th day of decreases.
- Death toll reaches 1,155, 24 additional deaths over past day.
- 874 hospital beds available - 74% capacity.
- 111 COVID-19 hospital discharges.
- Distributed over 3 million PPEs out of Dept. of Fire Rescue hub.
- Bellone: 'We are in no means out of the woods, but we are on a downward trajectory.' Looking at how to take next steps.
- Says multiple factors go into reopening - having testing, tracing in place, 'We need to get this right.'
- Working with colleagues, work officials to put plans in place for reopening things like beaches, pools, other recreational facilities.
- Gathering information from homeowners are doing as the county works to provide taxpayer relief. Wants people struggling to make payments to seek out assistance. Can call 311 for more info.

- Drive-thru drop-off food drives being held at locations in Our Lady of Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, Dix Hills Fire Department, Pronto in Bay Shore, Knights of Columbus in Ronkonkoma, Help for People in Patchogue, Axis Church Cafe in Medford, Assembly of God in Shirley on May 1.
