Service changes begin on LIRR due to coronavirus pandemic

Starting today the Long Island Rail Road will begin reducing service to stay afloat with less ridership due to the pandemic.

The MTA says service across its system has fallen to never before seen lows, including a 71% drop on the LIRR. The agency says 65% of overall service will be preserved to ensure essential staff can get to work.
"The MTA is working around the clock to provide essential service to the heroes on the front lines of this pandemic crisis - nurses, doctors, child care workers, transit workers and so many employees who are caring for and protecting and moving New York," says Pat Foye, MTA chairman.

The MTA says trains have been added to maximize capacity during peak hours.
Off-peak fares will be in effect all day during this special schedule.

Officials say in order to protect MTA workers, all ticket windows are closed to encourage riders to use their apps or ticket machines rather than cash.
