A community in mourning found a way to virtually come together and honor a Brooklyn principal who died from coronavirus complications. 

Dez-Ann Romain, 36, was the principal of Brooklyn Democracy Academy. She passed away earlier this week. Her memorial was held on Zoom.

"By doing this visual it allows us to come together and just really pay tribute to a beautiful life, a life well-lived,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. 

The virtual vigil was filled with pages and pages of friends, loved ones and students shedding tears and lighting candles. 

Loved ones say she spent her life standing up for what’s right and making sure her students had the opportunity to graduate. 

 

"When it came time for the test, I passed the test and she called me and she told me I graduated. She just knew how much I was scared to take that test and she took all the time out of her day to help me pass,” said a student. 

Adams says that once we have passed the coronavirus pandemic, he plans on having an in-person memorial for Romain.
