2 new clinical trials to battle coronavirus unveiled on Long Island

Health care officials on Long Island announced Friday two new clinical trials that may help treat people who are critically ill due to the coronavirus.
Northwell Health officials say that through the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, it's teaming up with Gilead Sciences and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals to conduct two clinical treatment trials.
With approval from the FDA, officials fast-tracked the trials with drugs already used to treat other medical conditions. Officials say the trial may help treat COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized at Northwell.
"We did this because our patients need options--no one drug will solve this crisis for all patients," says Dr. David Weinrich, of Regeneron. "But there is hope that drugs that have been used in China, South Korea, Norway and elsewhere has shown signals that some patients may benefit."
Northwell Health anticipates an increased volume of hospitalizations over the next few weeks. Officials hope that these cutting-edge efforts will speed up recovery and lead to hospital discharges for thousands of coronavirus patients.
