As Long Island gyms shut their doors due to coronavirus, people are turning to at-home gyms to continue their workout routines.
Sportset in Rockville Centre wanted to support Long Islanders during this time of crisis. It’s now temporarily closed like other gyms in the area.
“I really wanted to be an outlet for our community, so that way they just had a place to get out and work out if they were healthy of course,” says Sportset owner Dennison Silvio.
Silvio says it’s unsettling now to look around at the empty machines, weight room and cycle studio. Typically, there’d be about 250 people working out and a waitlist to get into any group class.
Over the last week, Silvio met with staff daily to come up with plans to deal with the changing guidelines. Members could only work out at every other machine. He said he never thought this would happen.
In another part of the fitness world, business is booming.
Ahmad Ehutta, of Huntington, says he’s already been by a number of shops that were sold out of equipment.
Silvio is also working on another plan for his clients: virtual fitness classes.
