Smithtown Senior Center to continue providing meals to seniors confined home due to pandemic

The Smithtown Senior Center is closed for the next two weeks in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, but the senior citizens who rely on getting their breakfast and lunch at center will still eat.
Normally, the place would be bustling with seniors. But since they will not be allowed to come for the next couple of weeks, the center will prepare the meals and deliver the food to their homes.
The suggested donation is $2.50 per meal.
Meals will be delivered to about 30 people who usually take the bus to eat at the center.
Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim said on Monday it's important to help the seniors, who are especially vulnerable during the virus outbreak.
"These folks will not be able to go out of the house. They're not going to be mobile. Most of them know it's best to stay inside and have no contact with the outside," Wehrheim said.

Wehrheim added at the end of those two weeks, he and other officials will reevaluate whether or not to keep the center closed.
Town officials said any senior in Smithtown who is not part of this program and would like to be can call the senior citizen center at 631-360-7616.
