Netflix film 'Lost Girls,' an adaptation of the Gilgo Beach murders, debuts online

A story that Long Islanders know all too well - the Gilgo Beach murders - now has its own film adaptation that premiered on Netflix and in select theaters Friday.
"Lost Girls" stars Amy Ryan, who plays Mari Gilbert; a mother determined to find her daughter, Shannan, after she disappears. The search for her daughter led to the uncovering of more than a dozen unsolved killings of sex workers.
Liz Garbus, the film's director, says she wanted to create the movie because of the incredible story and wants to make sure people remember the cases so that there can possibly be a resolution.
The film is inspired by Robert Kolker's best-selling nonfiction book of the same name.
In "Lost Girls," the North Fork doubled for Oak Beach, the area where Shannan went missing. They also filmed along Ocean Parkway.
