Several school districts on Long Island close due to coronavirus fears

Posted: Updated:

Port Washington, Sachem, Sewanhaka, Wantagh, Levittown and Three Village schools are among the districts on the Island to close amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Several other schools have already canceled classes to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The Valley Stream Central High School District also closed Friday morning to be disinfected. It comes after a staff member at Memorial Junior High School tested positive for COVID-19.

Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is closed until next Friday. The district says will hand out 300 Chromebook to their students grades 2-4 in order to make sure they can continue their lessons.

"Children will lead us through this, they are very comfortable being online and electronically savvy," says Superintendent Lorna Lewis.

Smithtown School District is closing on Monday for a week.

The Rockville Centre School District is currently open and officials say they are ready to roll if school needs to be canceled for an extended period of time.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is now waiving the 180-day minimum instructional requirement New York state school districts must meet due to the virus outbreak.
