The students returned to New York from Italy, which is dealing with thousands of cases of coronavirus.

The university says the Southampton campus was chosen by the state for the quarantine because it has the facilities that meet the state Department of Health's guidelines.

Stony Brook University say that the students aren't showing any signs or symptoms of the coronavirus at this time, but they're being quarantined as a precaution.

In a statement, Stony Brook officials said, "As part of the SUNY family, we welcomed 22 study abroad students to the Stony Brook Southampton campus last night. The students have been screened and show zero symptoms of COVID-19. As a preventative measure, they are undergoing this 14-day precautionary quarantine period, as would any traveler returning from Italy. We have taken measures to ensure these students are provided with every resource needed to make their precautionary quarantine period at Stony Brook Southampton as comfortable as possible."

While classes continue on the Southampton campus, the university says the quarantined students will be kept isolated from the college's population. It says the students will be kept in residential buildings that are currently unoccupied.

Stony Brook says the students will be regularly monitored to see if they develop any symptoms.

News 12 will host a 30-minute call-in show Monday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. where experts will answer your questions about the coronavirus. The show will be followed by a special Facebook Live Q&A.
