A 78-year-old Hicksville man is accused of assaulting an officer during a violent confrontation with police at his home.

Police say Joel Ferdinand kicked a box of bottles at officers.

They say he tried to stab them with a metal tobacco pipe and pushed an officer into a table.

The officer hit his head and had to be taken to the hospital.

Police had been called to Ferdinand's home for reports of a disturbance.

He's due in court next week.
