Survey determines cancer, drug abuse are top health worries on LI

Posted: Updated:

Nassau and Suffolk residents have different worries at the top of their minds when it comes to health concerns, a survey shows.

According to data compiled and analyzed by the Long Island Health Collaborative, Suffolk respondents are most concerned about drug and alcohol abuse in their community. Nassau residents listed cancer as their top concern for those around them.

The results come from the Community Health Assessment Survey, a tool collecting primary data about residents' health concerns for themselves and their communities. The survey took place over the duration of 2019.

Other high-ranking results within communities included obesity/weight loss, which came in fourth in both counties.

When asked for the top concern for themselves, heart disease/stroke was No. 1 in both counties for the second year in a row. Heart disease is the top killer of men and women in the U.S., according to the CDC.

Mental health concerns among individuals and within communities appeared fifth for Suffolk's rankings, but not in Nassau.

When asked what was needed to improve the health of their communities, the survey found Suffolk residents wanted mental health screenings, while Nassau said clean air/water.
