The Islanders have been splitting home games this season at the Coliseum and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Next season is expected to be the team's last before they move into their new home at Belmont, where a new arena is under construction.
Cuomo said the plan to return to Nassau Coliseum in the meantime is a "boost in the arm" for Long Island's economy. He said the Islanders "belong on Long Island," adding that they're not just a sports team but a "point of pride" and a "rallying cry" for Long Island.

Fans, like Meghan Stoll, of Massapequa, agreed with the governor.
“Nothing is like the barn. I think the barn is the best place for a game to be,” she told News 12.
Gov. Cuomo says the state invested $6 million to improve the Coliseum to meet the requirements of the NHL. He says the new arena, so far, is on time and on budget.
