City DOT works to patch winter potholes

The city says it’s working hard and fast to patch all of the potholes that have opened up this winter season.
Flat tires can be a big headache for car owners and it can also be a burden on their pockets.
The New York City Department of Transportation's roadway repair and maintenance division in the Bronx says its goal is to fill requests in at least three days.
"We are in a really good trend when resurfacing,” says John Messina, director of the DOT repair division. “We are addressing a lot of streets that were in poor condition.”
Messina gave News 12 a look into how potholes are repaired.
He says that the first thing they do is sweep out the potholes to get rid of any loose material. They then add hot liquid tar, followed by asphalt, which involving racking and rolling.
"It will dry up fairly quickly,” he says. “And the next process is we're going to compact it, tap it and that will speed up the process of the hole being ready to drive on."
The DOT says that in the past two months, over 9,000 potholes have been patched in the Bronx alone.
Brooklyn isn't far behind with over 4,000 potholes repaired.
The DOT says the weather has a lot to do with it.
