The children of a slain Suffolk detective are demanding justice for their father, the victim in a 30-year-old unsolved murder case.

Narcotics Detective and Suffolk County Police Officer Dennis Wustenhoff was in his police car parked in front of his North Patchogue home when a sophisticated pipe bomb put under his seat exploded. He was brought to Stony Brook Hospital but died from his injuries on Feb. 15, 1990.

No one was ever arrested for the incident.

Wustenhoff’s kids, Melissa, Jennifer and Kevin Wustenhoff, and his wife, Fran Wustenhoff, say 30 years of heartbreak have not kept them from seeking justice.

Even though no one was charged, the family says police told them at the time there was a person of interest.

“My father had an affair with a Nassau County police officer’s wife, and we feel the police officer is the one who killed my father,” says Melissa Wustenhoff. “This was an elaborate, well thought-out, premeditated murder.”

Each year, the family says the anniversary of their father and husband's death is a painful reminder that never fades.

“You grow up trying so hard to forget this awful horrific thing happened, but it’s like a cancer in your chest,” says Kevin Wustenhoff.

The family set up a Facebook page to seek information and help that will lead to an arrest in the murder. The Wustenhoff family says they have gained a lot of support and attention from those who want to help in the case.

Jenn Wustenhoff also says her family is calling for police to take a bigger role in the investigation.

“We think it is time the police department steps it up and gives us what we deserve, what my father deserves,” she says.

Melissa Wustenhoff Scelsi says it feels as though the case has been unsolved by design because of the lack of progress.

Suffolk police responded in a statement that reads in part, "... this department remains committed to apprehending the perpetrator or perpetrators responsible for his murder.”
