Family, students say goodbye to beloved Sachem teacher, coach

Posted: Updated:

Family, friends, students and colleagues said a final goodbye Friday to a beloved Sachem High School North teacher and coach.

Hundreds of people attended visitation Wednesday and Thursday for Matthew "Dezy" DiStefano.

DiStefano passed away Monday after being diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer about a year ago.

During his fight, DiStefano started the Dezy Strong Foundation to help others battling the disease.

In a recent interview with News 12 Long Island, DiStefano said his message is simple, that you don't have to do things in life - you get to do things in life.

A funeral Mass was held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holbrook. DiStefano's final resting place is at Washington Memorial Park in Mount Sinai.
