Commuters traveling through Nassau County may find themselves taking a different route home next week.
As construction on the Long Island Rail Road kicks into high gear on Feb. 3, New Hyde Park Road will be closed between Plaza Avenue and Fourth Avenue in the villages of New Hyde Park and Garden City.
In addition, LIRR customers using the adjacent platforms of the New Hyde Park station will use temporary platforms built west of South 12th Street, according to an MTA news release.
Officials say they expect the project and corresponding detours to last approximately seven months. In cooperation with local municipalities, detour routes have been established, the MTA says.
The LIRR Expansion Project, which has generated public concern about loud noise and harsh vibrations, is meant to improve serviceability of the railroad and improve safety, says Deputy Project Director Tom McGuinness. Constructing a third track will also allow flexibility for reverse commuters, he adds.
