Town of Brookhaven implements backup garbage pickup plan following sanitation service’s sudden departure

Posted: Updated:

Town of Brookhaven residents are asking what is going to happen to their garbage after Quickway carting broke its contract with the town to pick up residential trash.

The town says Quickway made the abrupt announcement at noon on New Year's Eve.

Brookhaven officials say Quickway carting's sudden announcement affects about 20% of the carting districts within the town. The affected communities include Farmingville, Manorville, Shoreham, Rocky Point and East Patchogue.

Quickway's announcement left town officials scrambling to find an alternative sanitation service.

Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico announced on his Facebook page that the town has lined up coverage for garbage pickup in the seven affected garbage collection areas with Colucci Carting.

Town officials also made it clear that they plan to hold Quickway accountable for breaking its contract. The town spokesman issued a statement that read:

"Quickway carting was one year into a multi-year contract where they were the successful bidder for residential refuse and recycling services. The Town of Brookhaven intends to pursue every available legal option as a result of this carter's unacceptable actions."

Quickway carting did not return News 12's calls for comment.
