Police are searching for the man who shot at them during a pursuit in Middle Island.

According to police, officers responded to a crash between a 2020 Volvo and a Nissan Pathfinder around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday at the corner of Middle Country Road and Wellington Road.

Police say when an officer arrived to the scene, the Volvo driver ran away and fired a handgun.

Investigators say the officer returned fire and was not injured.

Kurt Barak says his home surveillance camera captured some of the wild scene. He says the gunman can be seen stumbling across the road and falling. He says that when the police officer tried to arrest the man, he got up, and that’s when shots were fired.

Suffolk's Chief of Detectives Gerard Gigante says the man fired two shots from a handgun at the officer. He says the officer also fired two shots.

The gunman has not been caught.

The driver of the Nissan and her female passenger were taken to Stony Brook Hospital with minor injuries.
