Police say Clayton Beathard, the starting quarterback for LIU, was one of two victims stabbed to death outside a Nashville bar early Saturday morning.
According to a press release issued by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Beathard, 22, and Paul Trapeni III, 21, were fatally stabbed outside the Dogwood Bar & Grill during a fight. They say the altercation appears to have been over a woman inside the bar.
The Tennessean reports that Beathard was the brother of NFL quarterback C.J. Beathard of the San Francisco 49ers. He left the team before their matchup Saturday with the Los Angeles Rams to be with his family.
The family issued a statement that was posted on the LIU Post Football Facebook story that said in part, “Clay was an amazing, big and soft hearted human being with an undeniable love for the Lord. He had his family's, friends' and teammates' backs even to a fault. I wish he would have been more inclined to take the high road but he hated ‘wrong.’”
News 12 reached out the university, which offered it’s condolences to Beathard’s family and friends:
"On behalf of the LIU community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Clay’s family as well as to his teammates, and friends. Staff from the Center of Healthy Living are available to support LIU students at 516-299-3468. We are in contact with Clay’s family, and ask that their privacy is respected at this most difficult time.  When service details become available, we will share them with the community.   Clay, his family and all those who were fortunate to know him are in our thoughts and prayers."
LIU Post coach Bryan Collins also took to social media, saying that Beathard "had such an incredible impact within our family in such a short period of time."
Police shared a picture of a person wanted for questioning in regard to the incident.
