As of today, undocumented immigrants are getting the green light to apply for driver's licenses in New York.
The "Green Light Law" allows people in the county illegally to go to the Department of Motor Vehicle in New York and apply for a license.
However, immigrants will still have to show documentation proving their name, birthday and New York state residency.
Foreign passports will be accepted, as well as driver's licenses from other countries and even licenses that expired less than two years ago.
State Assemblyman Mike LiPetri says the new law is unfair to citizens and legal residents.
"Unfortunately what we're seeing is left wing extremists that want to cater to people who are here illegally rather than helping middle class Long Island people," says LiPetri.
Advocate Ana Flores with Make the Road New York disagrees. She says the measure will finally bring immigrants out of the shadows and put them safely behind the wheel.
