A new study from the National Institutes of Health states that women who use certain beauty products may increase their risk of breast cancer.
Permanent dyes and chemical straighteners may increase the risk. Tanya Kovacevic, the manager of FOS Living Organic Hair Salon in Garden City, says most of the salon's clients are pregnant women or cancer survivors who are looking to be safer when it comes to chemicals.
According to the study, women who regularly dyed their hair were 9% more likely to develop breast cancer. African-American women who used permanent hair dye had a 45% higher risk.
Erin Nau, a licensed clinical social worker with the Adelphi Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline, says it can't be determined what exactly causes cancer. She says she tells women to do the best they can when it comes to protecting themselves from the risk.
Kovacevic says any professional grade hair color or hair straightening product will have some chemicals in it. She says to look for products that have fewer chemicals or safer alternatives.
According to the study, women who use chemical straighteners have the same risk across all races at 30%.
