A teenager charged with fatally shooting his parents, sister and a family friend has been ordered to remain jailed while he awaits trial.
Defense attorneys for 18-year-old Scott Kologi had sought to have him transferred to a psychiatric facility.
A judge ruled Tuesday he will stay jailed in Monmouth County.
Kologi faces four counts of first-degree murder, and one count of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, stemming from the shooting at his family’s home in Long Branch on New Year’s Eve 2017.
According to police, on Dec. 31, 2017, around 11:45 p.m., police responded to the residence at 635 Wall St. for a report of a shooting. Scott, then 16, was arrested at the residence.

As part of the investigation, a rifle was secured and later identified as the weapon used in the homicides.  Four people inside the home were dead.
The victims were identified as the suspect's father, Steven Kologi, 44; mother Linda Kologi, 42; sister Brittany Kologi, 18; and family acquaintance, Mary Schultz, 70. The teen’s 20-year-old brother and grandfather were able to escape the attack.
Officials said the gun used in the killings was legally registered to a member of the household.
AP wire services helped contribute to this report.
