A Milford man is facing more than 30 counts of weapons-related charges that all stem from a welfare check police did over a year ago.
Police say Robert Brenner, 38, had a stockpile of illegal assault weapons, high capacity magazines and armor-piercing ammunition. Brenner was arrested Friday, but the investigation began in May 2018.
Authorities visited Brenner's home on Brewster Road last year because family members were concerned about his behavior. Police wouldn't go into specifics, but say that the visit resulted in Brenner being committed to Yale New Haven Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
While at Brenner's home, police saw firearms, so they got a risk search warrant and seized the weapons. It took some time, but officers eventually met with the Connecticut State Police Firearms Unit, which determined several items were illegal. Police got a warrant for Brenner's arrest earlier this month.
"In the wrong hands at the wrong time — we're all unfortunately all too aware of what can possibly happen," says Milford officer Mike DeVito. "But point being, we understand there was a time delay, there was a lapse from the seizure to the arrest, but the important thing to know is that they were off the street within 48 hours, secured in our building."
Brenner was released on a promise to appear in court Dec. 10.
