Canine Companions for Independence held its 7th Annual Veterans Day ceremony Thursday night in New Hyde Park.

Six veterans from Long Island were given the outstanding service award.

Among the honorees was 100-year-old World War II vet Jim Uvena, of Huntington.

Uvena is a 12th Armored Division sergeant who drove a Sherman tank on D-Day and served under General Patton.
He also earned the French Medal of Honor for helping liberate that country.
