Judge denies temporary restraining order to halt Belmont construction

Posted: Updated:

A judge Thursday denied the village of Floral Park's request for a temporary restraining order to stop construction connected with the redevelopment of Belmont.

This is the village's latest push to stop the project. They say truck traffic and noise are becoming a big issue for area residents. Officials argue that the state's study on such negative impacts was rushed through to get the project going.

Floral Park Mayor Dominic Longobardi says the village isn't trying to stop the project from being completed.

"We are hearing and seeing all the different issues that were raised for months, from the day this project started and we're seeing all those things happening now," says Longobardi. "Our real problem is that all of the things that we predicted would be problems, are problems."

One of the attorneys for the state says that such negative impacts are unavoidable when you're talking about a construction project of this size.

There's another motion seeking an injunction, but that's still pending.

The Belmont project is set to include a new arena for the Islanders, a hotel and retail space.
