Developers are facing backlash over a plan to build a four-story luxury apartment complex in downtown Riverhead.
A ship captain’s home has sat along the river on Main Street in Riverhead since the early 1800s. If Huntington developer G2D has its way, the historical house will be taken down and replaced by a luxury apartment complex with 36 units.
During a recent public hearing, several residents called the plan too big and out of character, saying the town was going in the wrong direction. “They are obstructing the panoramic view of the waterfront - because that is the true charm of this town,” said Judy Werner.
Civic Leader William Van Helmand said he worries the project might propel even more plans in the area. “It’s going to get out of hand, once you start with one it continues to escalate,” he said.

Riverhead Town Deputy Supervisor Catherine Kent said the project is not a done deal. She said, “Nothing has been approved here yet…I think that we do need to bring residential into our downtown area in order to revitalize it, but I don't think it needs to be right on the Main Street.”

The town is holding a public hearing on Nov. 14 at 6:30pm for residents to voice their concerns.
News 12 reached out to G2D for comment but has not heard back.
