More than 50,000 runners laced up their sneakers Sunday for the New York City Marathon.
The race started in Staten Island by the Verrazzano Bridge before making its way through all five boroughs and ending in Central Park. About a million spectators were expected to cheer on participants along the 26.2-mile route.
Geoffrey Kamworor, of Kenya, won the men's race, marking his second title in three years. He crossed the finish line in Central Park with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 13 seconds.
Joyciline Jepkosgei, also of Kenya, won the women's title, upsetting four-time winner Mary Keitany. Jepkosgei's time clocked in at 2 hours, 22 minutes and 38 seconds.
Many Long Islanders were taking part in the marathon, including Bethpage's James Delargy and his father. When he was 26 years old, a blood vessel ruptured his brain. He spent years recovering and had to re-learn how to walk. Delargy said he was racing for himself and the doctors who told him he'd be able to run again.
Also running Sunday was the wife of a fallen NYPD sergent from Greenlawn. Lisa Tuozzolo was running in her husband's honor. Monday marks three years since Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo was killed while working in the Bronx.
Lisa Tuozzolo was running with Team Silver Shield Foundation, a nonprofit offering educational support to children and spouses of fallen first responders.
The NYPD had boosted security in place for Sunday's race and there were road closures in effect.
