Police say a woman was hit in the head with a hammer in a home invasion in Shoreham Thursday morning.

The incident happened at a house on Suffolk Down at 3 a.m., according to police.

Officials say three men, including one armed with what appeared to be a gun, walked into the home.

They say six people were home at the time when the suspects confronted a man and woman in a bedroom, hitting the woman with a hammer.

Authorities say the trio tried stealing a safe but dropped it as they were leaving. Detectives believe the home was targeted.

The victim was treated and released from the hospital.
