There's a new push for clean cars on the streets of Long Island and across the U.S.

Sen. Chuck Schumer is proposing a nationwide plan that he says would save new car buyers money.

It would give car owners who trade in gasoline-powered vehicles subsidies to buy electric cars.

Those rebates could total as much as $5,000.

The goal is to cut carbon emissions from traditional gasoline-powered cars.
