The announcement of the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State group, has brought praise from both sides of the aisle.

Sen. Chuck Schumer said, "It's great that we've gotten al-Baghdadi and killed him. He's a dangerous man, an evil man. The fight against ISIS has to continue."

The senator also added in a tweet not to confuse "The death of this evil man with the total defeat of ISIS."

Rep. Tom Suozzi says while people on Long Island should feel a sense of relief about al-Baghdadi's death, he says the fight against the Islamic State group is not over.

"There are other people that are motivated by this awful ideology that wants to kill people in the West," Suozzi said.

In a tweet, Rep. Peter King said, "ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead. Killed by U.S. Special Forces. Outstanding victory against terrorism. The fight goes on. God Bless America."

In a statement to News 12, Rep. Lee Zeldin said in part, "A world without Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is a better world without one of the most evil, murderous animals in human history...Americans woke up this Sunday morning especially grateful for the men and women involved in this successful operation to deliver justice to this cowardly ISIS terrorist."

All of the New York officials News 12 spoke with said they did not have any prior knowledge of the raid.

President Trump said he did not inform lawmakers before the raid because he was fearful of leaks.
