Long Island runners hit the pavement Sunday for this year's Suffolk County Marathon in Patchogue, despite the gloomy forecast.

The fifth annual marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K races are dedicated to World War II veterans. All proceeds support local veteran groups.

New York Mets starting pitcher and Medford native Marcus Stroman signaled the start of the race.

The marathon is 26.2 miles and took runners through several towns including Sayville, Blue Point and Oakdale.

The event started and finished in Patchogue and village Mayor Paul Pontieri says the marathon has been a big boost for businesses over the years.

"Downtown Patchogue has come a long way and it will continue to grow, but it grows because of events like this where you bring people in who typically don't come to Patchogue," Pontieri said.

The men's winner was Massapequa native Bryan Buttigieg, who finished in 2 hours, 53 minutes and 8 seconds. The women's winner was Brooklyn resident Leiba Rimler, crossing the finish line after 3 hours, 9 minutes and 29 seconds.
