A plan to build luxury homes in East Quogue that many environmentalists thought was dead in the water is now back on the table.
A developer from Arizona had planned to take a 600-acre site of underdeveloped land in the Pine Barrens and turn it into 118 luxury homes, a golf course and a club house.
The project, known as the Hills, was viewed as a threat to the drinking water by environmentalists. The Southampton Town Board eventually squashed the project, citing that the development was incompatible with land use.
Now the developer, Discovery Land, is pitching the project once again to the Southampton board. This time the Southampton Town Planning Board approved one of the first steps toward reviving the plan. Discovery Land is also now operating under a new name, the Lewis Road Planned Residential Development.
Those opposed to the plan says it's the same bad plan with the same negative impacts.
"We've got an Islandwide water quality problem because we've overdeveloped and this is the biggest piece of the Pine Barrens left and we are going to turn it into an amusement park," says Dick Amper, of the Pine Barrens Society.
In order for the project to move forward, the developer must get approval from the Pine Barrens Commission, which environmentalists say is unlikely.
