Island Vote 2019 In-Studio Debate: Hempstead Town Supervisor

Posted: Updated:

Watch the full, in-studio debate between Donald Clavin (R,C,I,TR), incumbent Laura Gillen (D,WF) and Diane Madden (L).

A summary from News 12's Rich Barrabi, who moderated the debate:

In the race for supervisor in America's largest township, incumbent Laura Gillen and challengers Don Clavin and Diane Madden sparred over a whole host of issues. Supervisor Gillen touted her efforts to rid the town of corruption and stabilize its finances. The Democrat promised to continue working to remove the vendor who operates many of the town's beach facilities.

Republican Don Clavin, who is currently the Hempstead Receiver of Taxes, criticized Gillen for voting against a tax cut last year, and vowed to hold department commissioners accountable. Libertarian animal welfare advocate Diane Madden promised to address the town's beleaguered animal shelter, and challenge the two-party system.

The candidates also discussed environmental issues, efforts to provide affordable housing options for millenials and how Nassau County's reassessment plan will impact Hempstead town residents.
