Police say a 61-year-old bicyclist was found critically injured along Deposit Road in East Northport Saturday.

Jeff Soskel says he called for help after he spotted Vincent Farrugia, of Commack, lying unconscious along the road.

"As I'm driving, I see the bicycle on the ground. He was lying there, and his head was bleeding pretty bad," says Soskel.

Detective Sgt. James Scimone says Farrugia was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head injuries. It is unknown how long Farrugia was at the scene before he was discovered.

Scimone also says that the cause of Farrugia's injuries is unknown and that any witnesses are asked to call police.

"We would like to know if it was just a bicycle accident or possibly a car hit him," says Scimone. Though, he also says there was little damage done to the bike.

Farrugia's neighbors say they knew him as someone who would often help others. They say he frequently rode his bicycle.

In May 2000, News 12 reported about Farrugia when he went missing. Police found his car abandoned on the west side of Manhattan, and he was later found.

Now, his family is by his bedside at Stony Brook University Hospital and say they are asking for privacy.

Officials say the Farrugia is in critical condition.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
