The city of Norwalk is using data to help ease parking by installing hundreds of new sensors in public parking spaces.

Work on the 270 new parking sensors was scheduled to continue through the week, but crews say they are confident they will be done by Wednesday afternoon.

The city budgeted $48,000 for the sensors, which will keep tabs on which spaces are occupied at certain times of the day.

Officials say that data will help the Norwalk Parking Authority decide what areas need new spaces, more meters or different rates. They say in a few years, the sensors may help drivers find parking spots. The goal is to tie the data into smartphone apps.

Neno Lopes just opened his barbershop on North Main a few weeks ago. He says if parking rates spike, his customers will be affected. But other residents say if the sensors ease parking congestion, they are all for them.

City officials are holding a public meeting at the Yankee Doodle Garage on Burnell Boulevard Wednesday to address concerns.
