Town of Huntington votes to allow leashed dogs at Heckscher Park
The Town of Huntington has voted to allow leashed dogs at Heckscher Park.
The town banned the dogs at the park after seniors at a local senior center complained about dogs on the park's narrow paths.
The new set of rules regarding leashed dogs include that dogs must be leashed at all times and they are not allowed on the playground, picnic areas and tennis courts but are allowed on sports fields if they are not being used.
A petition in favor of allowing the dogs generated over 1,500 signatures.
A pilot program for the new legislation will take place from Jan. 1 to Mar. 31 of 2020.
