The mayor of Paterson is vowing to increase police patrols following a deadly weekend in the city.
A DoorDash delivery driver was shot and killed in Paterson Friday night. Petra Rhoden was found inside her car after she crashed it on Harrison Street and Rosa Parks Boulevard. Authorities say that she was shot and later died at the hospital.
Rhoden’s friends and family are demanding answers.
"She ain't do nothing but work, come home and tend to her kids and her grandkids. That's all. That's the only thing she was about, making money, doing good for herself in the city of Paterson,” says friend Tamika Bundick. “It's hard to live here. And all this violence, it needs to stop.”
Police say that another woman was shot Sunday in the city. When police responded to the scene, they did not find the victim. Authorities say that the victim was taken to the hospital by some other means, but is expected to be OK.
And a 13-year-old boy was found dead early Monday morning in a yard on Harrison street, about a block away from where Rhoden was shot.
An autopsy is pending to find out how the boy died. His name was not released.
Mayor Andre Sayegh says that police will be out in full force to help keep crime under control.
“I've authorized another special operation group…We saturate the streets in the crime-ridden areas. Areas that are most troubled. We've done it in the past with success. So, we're going to continue to do that. The problem is some of these shootings and incidents that are occurring are occurring in areas that do not see this level of activity,” the mayor says.
Sayegh said that most of the crime in the city can be linked to drug trafficking.
