Nassau, Suffolk police step up patrols ahead of 'Joker' premiere

The "Joker" is one of the most highly anticipated movie premieres of the year, and police across Long Island are making sure it's a peaceful debut.
Nassau and Suffolk police are stepping up patrols at theaters across the Island ahead of Friday's premiere amid concerns that the Joker character could inspire someone to commit an act of violence.
"As the movie rolls out, we will be there," says Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. "The movie theaters have all taken a precautionary security enhancement and our homeland office went out and did an assessment with all the officers, all the theaters that are going to be playing this movie and they're advising them what they think is the best security measures during this playing."
The dark theme of the R-rated thriller about the rise of Batman's bad clown nemesis has brought back memories of a mass shooting in which 12 people were killed and 70 injured at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado in 2012.
Ryder tells News 12 that the Nassau theaters showing the 'Joker' have hired armed security guards to work the event.
Some theaters are even banning masks and costumes at the showings.
