Eastport cancer survivor honored as Suffolk's sheriff for a day

Posted: Updated:

Suffolk's sheriff gave a 12-year-old who beat cancer a day he will never forget.

Douglas Grimmett, of Eastport, beat acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He was diagnosed in May 2013, and after three years of chemotherapy and other treatment, he came out on top.

Now, with his little brother serving by his side, Grimmett called the shots Tuesday as the Suffolk sheriff.

Law enforcement runs in the Grimmett family -- his father Adam is a member of the NYPD.

"This has just been a roller coaster and a life-changing event," says Adam Gimmett.

The man who made Douglas' dream come true, Suffolk Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr., is a two-time cancer survivor himself.

"To meet a young man that has gone through this at such an early age and his life is really inspirational not only to me," says Toulon Jr.

The Suffolk Sheriff's Department worked with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to surprise Douglas with the event.
