A Freeport teacher is under investigation for a lesson that's being called racist and insensitive.
A student's grandmother uploaded photos of the assignment on Facebook Sept. 20, claiming her granddaughter's friend was asked by her teacher at J.W. Dodd Middle School to write "funny" captions or titles on several black-and-white photos of slaves.
The grandmother also alleged that the teacher, who is white, told the students to make the captions "real funny" because she didn't want to be bored.
The post has been shared nearly 1,600 times.
The superintendent says the school has been informed of the assignment, saying, "I have directed that an investigation of these claims be immediately conducted. Since this matter involves a district employee and is a personnel matter, there will be no further comment."
The superintendent ordered an immediate investigation at the middle school. The teacher who was allegedly involved has been reassigned outside of the classroom for now.
"That was very inappropriate. I would have an issue if it was my son that got that homework. I don't like that," said Trieshel Gordon.
Not everyone thinks the teacher meant to be insensitive or inappropriate. News 12 spoke to two eighth graders who had the same assignment. They claim the teacher told the class to be "clever and creative" with their picture captions and not "boring," but never specifically said to be funny.
News 12 spoke with the mother of the student referenced in the social media post who was disturbed by the assignment -- but she did not want to answer any questions or speak about the assignment.
