Some students brought the strike and its message to the Island.
At Islip Town Hall, Sayville High School student Joanna Ziegler organized a rally to join students from around the world for a day of action on climate change.
Joanna Ziegler says she hopes her message to advocate for climate change is heard beyond Long Island. “We want one thing, we want climate action, doesn't matter what party you're in, this is a nonpartisan issue, this is science. We want to see action taken to help our planet,” she says.
At South Side High School in Rockville Centre, students that couldn't go the climate change strike say they brought the message to the hallways of their school.
Students say they hope that their efforts draw the attention of politicians who can make laws that will help reverse the effects of climate change.
The Global Climate Strike took place ahead of next week's Climate Action Summit at the U.N.
