It's prime apple picking season! There are over 2,500 different varieties of apples growing in the United States!
News 12's Elisa DiStefano learns about the most popular apple varieties from Brandi Brady of Whole Foods.
Crustless and bakeless apple pie recipe:
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon butter or olive oil
4 apples of your choice, peeled, cored and sliced (something firm that won’t turn to mush like a Granny Smith)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom (optional)
2 tablespoon brown sugar or maple syrup
Pinch of salt
Juice from one orange, about 1/2 cup
Vanilla ice cream, optional
Instructions:
In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter (or oil) then add apples. Cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring gently.
Add spices, brown sugar (or maple syrup), orange juice, and pinch of salt. Stir to evenly coat all the apples.
Cook another 5 minutes until the apples are soft and caramelized. Divide among 4 bowls and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
*Also can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheated, or used as a topping for yogurt or oatmeal.
