A family got to meet the Nassau County police officers who saved their teenage daughter's life.

On May 8, the then-13-year-old Kayla Viscusi suffered sudden cardiac arrest at her house on Lace Lane in Westbury. Her mother says she found her daughter on her bedroom floor with her face turning blue.  

Viscusi had no pulse when police arrived, but the officers and medics were able to revive her with an AED defibrillator.

Paramedics arrived shortly after and performed CPR on Viscusi.

Viscusi underwent open heart surgery and now is doing well. Her parents say they found out she was born with a congenital heart defect called alcapa.

The Heather Pendergast Foundation donated an AED device to the Viscusi family.

Kayla's parents say they're sharing their story to raise awareness about the importance of getting children screened for congenital heart defects, which can sometimes go undetected until there's an emergency.
