Huntington town officials say they want to change town building codes to rein in growth in the popular village.
Supervisor Chad Lupinacci announced that he'll be introducing a legislation to tighten current zoning rules, specifically aimed at the busy village area. He says new zoning rules will put size restrictions on future developments, limit environmental impact and sewage, and require adequate private parking.
"I think we have the best downtown area in terms of culture, the arts, restaurants and bars in any of Long Island," says Lupinacci. "At the same time, we want to balance economic activity with providing places for people to live and just making sure there's certain controls in place for future development."
Some residents say they are on board with the idea. "This is a great town, so to have better parking it would attract more people," says Clare Harkins.
Huntington Civic Activist Patrick Deegan says the zoning changes are needed, but isn't sure how it will solve the existing parking and traffic problems.
"It seems like this is a step in the right direction," Deegan says. "The question though is it too little too late. We are already burdened with traffic and high density."
Supervisor Lupinacci says the new zoning rules will be introduced next week with public comment to follow in October. He says the Town Board could vote on the proposed rules before the end of the year.
