Many of the heroes who ran to help at Ground Zero are now suffering, many have even died, from 9/11-related illnesses.

One of those heroes, Luis Alvarez, of Oceanside, was honored Tuesday during a 9/11 ceremony in Brooklyn. 

Detective Alvarez lost his battle with cancer in June, but before he passed away, he testified on Capitol Hill and helped to secure health care benefits for thousands of fellow Ground Zero responders.

Alvarez's brother, Phil Alvarez, spoke about his humble brother.  "He was an under the radar kind of guy - he always used to say I hope they remember the message and forget my name as soon as they hear it," said Alvarez.

And Nassau lawmakers unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday creating a lasting tribute to Alvarez.

They will officially change the name of Terrell Avenue Park in Oceanside to Detective Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park.
