A team with the North Shore Animal League is expected to arrive in Port Washington Sunday with more than 50 dogs and cats rescued from areas affected by Hurricane Dorian.

The organization says its mobile rescue unit started heading down south last week and picked up 35 cats and nearly 20 dogs who were in shelters in North and South Carolina. It says that helps clear space in those shelters for animals that were displaced due to the storm.

Once the unit arrives, the animals will be seen by veterinarians and groomed. They will then be put up for adoption.

The North Shore Animal League says it has to make space in its shelter for new animals, so it's waiving adoption fees until the end of the day.
