Public workers are pushing for Gov. Cuomo to sign a measure that would give better disability pension benefits to public workers who were sickened by the toxic fumes at Ground Zero.
Tim DeMeo says he worked with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Emergency Spill Response Unit and responded to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. The 50-year-old says he was there when the towers collapsed and spent the next several months working at Ground Zero.
DeMeo is not entitled to the same disability pension benefits as first responders.
There is now legislation that would help public workers who worked at Ground Zero.
The legislation was passed in both the Assembly and the Senate in June and is now waiting for the governor's signature.
